How to Make the Coffee with a Dominican Greca
Using a Dominican greca coffeemaker (espresso maker) is actually very easy. The greca uses steam pressure to push boiling water up through coffee grounds, producing a concentrated brew. This makes for a strong, rich, espresso-like coffee often referred to as “cafecito” or “stovetop espresso”. I have outlined the main steps with a few special hints.
- Unscrew the greca top from greca base. Hint: The top has the handle.
- Take out the greca filter from bottom of greca.
Hint: The filter inside looks like a funnel. The funnel nests inside the base of the greca.
- Fill the greca base with water. Hint: Fill base with water to the level of the safety valve.

- Remove the greca filter and fill with coffee. Optionally, add cinnamon or nutmeg

Hint 1: The more coffee you add to the filter the stronger it’s going to be. Usually filling up the filter 3/4 is enough for a delicious coffee
5. Place greca filled with coffee into greca base, which should already have water (Step 3).
- Carefully screw the greca top to the greca base (which should have both coffee and water).
Hint: Make sure the top is completely screwed on to the base before putting on the stovetop.
- Place on stove to heat.
Hint: Make sure the handle of the greca is not over the heat source.
- Wait for greca to percolate your coffee until it is ready to serve.
- Serve and enjoy!
